ZONE A: FURNITURE ZONE
A lively mall structure over three storeys with
50 furniture and kitchen retailers. The MegaStores will be
much better accessible thanks to the Trekvliet route.
Conditions to attract regional consumers are developing
positively.
ZONE B: CONSUMER GOODS
A transition zone between the furniture zone and
the local shopping centre with outlets in the following
sectors: sports, consumer electronics, pets, household
goods, toys, kitchens and bedding. The large establishments
here, combined with those in zones C and D, will offer
consumers a full package of consumer goods with strong local
and regional attractive power.
ZONE C: LOCAL SHOPPING CENTRE
A local shopping centre with two renowned
supermarkets, a (small-scale) department store and
supplementary smaller scale shops. The growing local
population and power of attraction of the centre will raise
demand for such daily goods. Consequently, additional space
will be fully justified for local shopping centre.
ZONE D: CULTURAL I CONVENTION CENTRE
All zones will include high-quality catering
facilities (orange). The team, in deliberation with the
municipality of The Hague, will also develop an urban vision
for the area surrounding the MegaStores. Key points include
the following:
MegaStores will have a new
entrance on the east side opposite the tram stop at
Leeghwaterplein. The pedestrian pathways from Holland’s
Spoor, the Hague University and the tram stop to the
MegaStores will be improved.
In front of the new
entrance will be a square with terraces. The square will
provide good connection with the newly developed
Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep.
Above the new entrance a
residential tower block including a hotel, apartments
and offices will be built. This will make MegaStores
more noticeable.
The indented section
(armpit) of the MegaStores 3e Van der Kunstraat will be
built over. The first two storeys will be destined for
shops; above this two residential tower blocks will be
constructed. The direct result of adding the residential
towers of some 180 apartments in total will be increased
demand for daily goods and general social revival of the
area. This will be intensified by the 7,000 new houses
in the immediate vicinity and the new Mondriaan
Onderwijsgroep which will add day and evening students
(as described).
The internal routing of
the MegaStores will be optimised.
This will improve
interaction between the different zones.
The different zones of the
MegaStores will be clearly profiled and positioned.
